Influence of Foliage Sprays on Drought Resistance of Conifers.

چکیده
Periodic drought is one of the most serious hazards to young conifer plantations in several regions of this country. In the Lake States region, for example, droughts have occurred in four years of the past seven. Biologists have suggested that repellent substances sprayed on leaves of conifers to prevent rodent damage might, in addition, have a beneficial effect on survival during droughts. It seemed desirable to make a careful test of a few sprays to determine if they were of any real use in increasing resistance to drought. The present paper describes experiments designed to test the protective value of various sprays that have been suggested as useful agents in lowering transpiration. Review of literature

Resistance of Trichoplusia ni populations selected by Bacillus thuringiensis sprays to cotton plants expressing pyramided Bacillus thuringiensis toxins Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab.
Two populations of Trichoplusia ni that had developed resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis sprays (Bt sprays) in commercial greenhouse vegetable production were tested for resistance to Bt cotton (BollGard II) plants expressing pyramided Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab. The T. ni colonies resistant to Bacillus thuringiensis serovar kurstaki formulations were not only resistant to the Bt toxin Cry1Ac, as prev...
متن کاملFormulation of Sprays to Improve the Efficacy of Foliar Fertilisers
Spray adjuvants can be employed in the foliar application of fertiliser to ensure adhesion of aqueous sprays to the waxy surfaces of foliage (wetters), to improve coverage of spray on foliage (spreaders), to minimise weathering of fertiliser deposits on foliage (stickers/extenders), and to increase the uptake of fertiliser into foliage (humectants, pH modifiers, and penetrants). Even with impro...
متن کاملTranspiration and Physico-chemical Properties of Leaves as Related to Drought Resistance in Loblolly Pine and Shortleaf Pine.
In the reforestation program now being carried on by various state and federal agencies, many millions of tree seedlings are planted each year. An extremely large number of these planted seedlings are killed within the first year or two after planting. One of the major causes of the fatalities is the inability of seedlings to resist drought. If the properties involved in drought resistance of s...
متن کاملXylem cavitation caused by drought and freezing stress in four co-occurring Juniperus species
doi: 10.1111/j.1399-3054.2006.00644.x Previous studies indicate that conifers are vulnerable to cavitation induced by drought but in many cases, not by freezing. Rarely have vulnerability to drought and freezing stress been studied together, even though both influence plant physiology and the abundance and distribution of plants in many regions of the world. We studied vulnerability to droughta...
متن کاملFoliage influences forced convection heat transfer in conifer branches and buds.
Conifer foliage structures affect branch and bud temperature by altering the development and convective resistance of the thermal boundary layer. This paper examines foliage effects on forced convection in branches and buds of Picea glauca (Moench) Voss and Pinus contorta Dougl. Ex. Loud., two species that represent the range of variation in foliage structure among conifers. Forced convection i...
